GST Invoice Checklist for Indian Shops
A pre-issue checklist for GST fields, mixed rates and place-of-supply decisions.
Before creating a GST bill
- Confirm whether this transaction requires a tax invoice, bill of supply or another document. This depends on registration and transaction type.
- Check the legal business name, applicable GSTIN and place-of-supply information you need to record.
- Verify each item description, quantity, taxable value, applicable GST rate and any product classification used in your business.
- Confirm whether the supply is intra-state or inter-state before applying CGST/SGST or IGST.
- Inspect the printed preview and verify the totals before handing the invoice to a customer.
- Export invoices and GST reports; reconcile them with your books and official filings.
Worked example: two GST rates
| Line | Taxable amount | Illustrative rate | Tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| Item A | ₹200 | 5% | ₹10 |
| Item B | ₹100 | 18% | ₹18 |
| Total | ₹300 | — | ₹28 |
Illustrative final total: ₹328. For an eligible intra-state supply, the illustrative ₹28 tax would comprise CGST ₹14 + SGST ₹14. For an eligible inter-state supply, IGST would be ₹28. These examples do not determine what rate applies to a real product.
