On-site vs Online Menu Pricing: When Separate Prices Make Sense

Online and delivery orders can have different economics from walk-in sales. Here is a simple way to think about separate menu prices without confusing staff or customers.

Why prices may differ

Online channels can introduce packaging, platform, payment or handling costs that do not exist for a customer ordering at the counter. A separate online price can help the business reflect those costs.

Keep the difference understandable

Small differences are easier for staff to manage than constantly changing manual markups. For a simple catalogue, a business might choose an online price that is modestly higher than the on-site price and then edit exceptions item by item.

Make order type explicit

The billing screen should clearly show whether the current bill is on-site or online. Changing the order type should immediately recalculate prices before the bill is completed.

QR table orders are normally on-site

A customer scanning a QR code while physically seated at a table is seeing the on-site menu. That request should normally remain on-site pricing when staff import it into the bill.

Avoid arbitrary price edits during billing

If staff can freely overwrite the price on every bill, reporting becomes harder to trust. It is cleaner to maintain prices in the catalogue and use a deliberate discount feature later if the business needs one.

Try the workflow yourself

Bill It Bharat includes a no-login live demo so you can create a bill, switch pricing modes and try QR ordering before signing in.
